Even if you are subject to the school card , it is possible to obtain an exemption by invoking several cases (disability of the child, need for medical assistance near the college, scholarships, sister or brother already educated in the college, proximity of the establishment in relation to the residence, option or specialist not offered in the establishment of the sector, but also family organization, ease of transport, place of work, etc.).
If you want to enroll your child in a private college, however, you do not need to apply for an exemption. But you might need a little help choosing your child’s college . Here are some criteria to consider!
The pass and mention rate for college patents
More than knowing that the college you are aiming for has a high pass rate, what is important is knowing the progression. A college that has improved its success rate by 20 points in 10 years is a good indicator of excellence and questioning to always do better .
Same with the mention rate. If it has been growing for several years, that says a lot about the improvement of the establishment and the results of the students.
Figures to put into perspective
According to L’Etudiant’s ranking, out of 6,870 colleges, the average pass rate is 89% per college for the period 2019–2021, and the average mention rate is 79%.
The success rate and the mention rate are to be put into perspective because they correlate with the social and territorial origins of the students . This criterion is therefore subject to inequalities.
The college atmosphere
Quantifiable data is relatively easy to obtain, but it is not everything. Difficult to feel the criterion of the atmosphere but you can rely on word of mouth.
A teacher teaches college students on the blackboard.
Find out about the teaching team and their involvement with students. We also recommend that you make an appointment with the principal to ask all your questions.
You will have an idea of team cohesion and student support through a personalized program or not.
You will also be able to find out about the educational tools made available and the skills taught (openness to others, awareness of certain situations such as racism or disability, etc.). Also look at the side of the organized school trips , as well as the trips and group work offered.
The information communicated by the establishment
The dialogue between you, the college management, the teachers and the teaching teams must be fluid and simple . The more you are informed of the establishment’s practices, the more confidence you will have in the institution. Your child will feel it and be reassured at the same time.
This involves the information given on school results , parent-teacher meetings , the ease of making an appointment
The ranking of the best private colleges in France
This ranking is based on data from the Ministry of National Education but only takes into account the success rates and the mention rates over 3 years . It must therefore be put into perspective according to the criteria mentioned in the previous section.
Two colleges arrive tied 20/20 with 100% success rate and 100% mention rate . These are the Jeannine Manuel college in Marcq-en-Baroeul and the Joan of Arc college in Perpignan.
The private colleges highlighted here all obtain a mark higher than 19/20 which is the average between the success rate and the patent mention rate. Obviously, since these institutions are selective, these rates are higher than in public colleges.
